This week, since all of us are celebrating fall I found it the proper time to introduce Jack-O-Lanterns to the children of Billesborg. Many of you may think of the obvious reason to do so: Halloween. However, I sensed that Denmark could use it in an alternative way. Danish folks welcome various “light” into their homes. Lanterns, candles or any dim lit room is said to be “hygge” (pronounced huga) or as I would describe it cozy and comfortable. This type of atmosphere is year round and usually consists of coffee, tea, cake, and lovely conversation. “Hygge” is very special when the temperatures drop and you can no longer enjoy the outdoors. On the weekends one can usually find a Dane with friends or relatives gathered by a fireplace enjoying this special ambiance. Jack-O-Lanterns become relevant in the fall, not only for a fun loving child but also a classy Dane looking for various ways to celebrate a warm environment.

Few Danish children have participated in carving fruit into faces so you can imagine their surprise when their favorite expression appeared on a pumpkin in a matter of an hour or so. Now, imagine their parents joining in the fun when their child’s creation “lights” up the room.

Though, the parents have yet to be informed of this brilliant idea, I can prepare to advertise this way next year. For now, we all had fun being creative!

Have a happy autumn!
