Kronborg Castle and other Fairy Tales

This weekend, to celebrate our 2nd year anniversary, Simon and I chose to use a little creativity. One day about 3 weeks ago, when we were searching for a holiday we came across a kissing guide for Denmark's couples. There we found loads of romantic places from spas to hotels to nude beaches (yikes). We also found a Badehotel (Bath hotel) in Gilleleje. Gilleleje is a small town located in Northern Zealand. It is a great tourist spot for those with mange penge. It is a very picturesque village located on the water. When we got there we discovered that it was actually on cliffs...but that is for later. First things first.

We needed a car to get to Gilleleje so farmor and farfar generously opted theirs and we said yes. We stayed Friday night with them and grazed on wonderful food that stimulated every taste bud...especially the chocolate mousse. After dinner Inger, Jorg and I went to see a play at the Efterskole where Jorg teaches while Simon snoozed and relaxed as he normally does on Friday evenings. The play was very creative and the kids very talented.

Outside the snow was coming down pretty consistently and by midnight we had a nice little blanket. Simon and I went to bed and woke up to another feast. This time it was eggs and bacon and sausage, ugh, I ate so much this weekend. Farmor had made us a nice little brunch for the adventure ahead. Then, we were off. Simon and his dad had suggested some activities we could do before we went to the hotel. Our first stop was Kronborg Slot.

This is the castle where hamlet supposedly took place. I am not sure the history of it to tell you honestly. I simply enjoyed being outside in the sunlight, watching strange activities go on before me. First we ran across a man and his dog and they were cute. The dog was drinking the sea water while the water itself was nearly freezing. Then there was a guy fishing without gloves. That chilled me to the bone. THEN, the best part, we saw a kid throwing a temper tantrum because he didn't wanna walk anymore and his parents were shortly up ahead. The boy opted to crawl in the snow instead. O, I remember those days.. Simon got some great shots and I must say the landscape was beautiful. Wanna know more about Kronborg? http://www.kronborgcastle.com/
for a historical exclamation.

After we hit up the castle we made our way up to Gilleleje. We took the beach road and I saw the best waves that I have seen in Denmark (waste to chest but cleaner than in Jutland). I was making arrangements in my brain about how I could move up here and commute to Koge everyday (2 hours each way) ship my surfboard from the ob, and live in a cardboard box. I'm flexible but Simon needs his beauty sleep so I don't think that would work with the cardboard box. O well, after a few tears I left my surfing dreams and we entered the village. We took a few turns and found our hotel.

We were not extremely amazed until after we sat in the sauna and had a steam bath then sat by the fire and went to dinner where I feasted on duck, risotto and some other yummy stuff that is too gourmet for me to pronounce. Then we were like wow! This is a nice place. Our hotel sat on a cliff overlooking the water (waves were decent but messy therefore not really decent). Our room was a big open place with nothing on the wall, an entire room for the shower, an entire room for the toilet and an entire room where the bed, a big sofa and coffee table sat. It was very peaceful. That night I fell asleep to the ocean and the wind. Something you don't get at Billesborg.

The next morning we got up and ate some breakfast and went down to the beach. Unfortunately, it was raining, but we decided it would do us good to enjoy the nature and walk in it. Plus, that day we were coming back to the sauna and the steam bath. We explored for about 45 minutes, came and sat by the fire once again and then prepared for our spa experience. We got in the sauna, took a shower, and then prepared for our hour massage. Afterwards we would go home and I would make it in time for Beyond the Break. We got our massage and I was about to fall down. Then our masseuse asked if we wanted a jacuzzi bath. I mean, who would say no to a jacuzzi bath. Simon and I went into a private room and took another bath (I must have bathed 9 times in a 24 hour time period). I guess that is why it is called a bath hotel. Then we went home. Here are the pictures: I hope you enjoy! The kissing guide was very helpful! And I made it home before Beyond the Break.
