The trouble began when we couldn't bare to look at our blue bedroom carpet anymore (it's so butt). We have had reports that 2 couples before us had used it and it was threatened to go all the way to the 80's. Despite the 80's reputable nature nowadays the carpet was still ugly and we agreed to retire it. Simon was on his winter holiday so we sensed it would be a fashionably good time to begin the procedure. "We would be bored with nothing to do...we have had plenty of romancing...we will sip tea during breaks and chill in the evenings with a movie...see, still time for romance," we kept telling ourselves.
Was this gonna be fun or what? Ahhh, NO! What was supposed to be a short walk in the park turned out to be a two week trip to freaking...i dunno, where is one place you don't wanna be...that's where we were. National Lampoonish.
We began by taking the carpet off. Phew! That was so easy. Then Simon started chipping away tile that was underneath the carpet with a hammer and chisel. "Wow," I thought, "That looks easy, stress relieving, and I can't believe I'm going to say this: fun!"
So, I joined in. Beneath the tile we began to see what seemed to be a thin layer of boards. "Ok," I thought, "after we rip up the boards we will be done."
Our idea was just to paint the natural wood white, giving it a shabby chic look. No sanding involved. I was finding it very simple to remove everything and man, any stress I felt was coming out of the hammer and dag gone it was fun! We finished in a little under a day and slept very good. I woke up the next morning rejuvenated and refreshed so when we began to chip away the plaster that was under the boards I was enthusiastic.
Well let me just say that it was Tuesday when we started the plaster. Today is Monday. Yesterday we threw in the "tile" and called it a week.
After church we decided it would be a jolly good time to go into town. We had enough of it all! I was dreaming of chipping, hammering, soaking plaster in water, sweeping, scraping, banker banker banker (hammering, hammering, hammering)! So off to the grocery store we went. This was fun! I love to ride bikes with Simon. We hold hands and reminisce about the summers on the Outer Banks, YWAM, and my Denmark visits. We make plans for dinner for our week ahead. You really have to get creative when you have time off so we always talk about the activities I can participate in while Simon is at work.
So after a relaxing ride into town we were returning home and the pedal of my brand new bike broke off, my toes became half frost bitten and, I couldn't feel my fingertips. I was laughing hysterically because we survived a challenging week. Not to mention there was nothing to be upset about because the air was crisp, birds were chirping and I was alone with my husband enjoying his presence.
We still have quite a bit to go with the floor. This coming weekend we will be traveling to Berlin with the school kids so perhaps before we leave it will be done. UGH! The day we can sleep in the room once more....
I guess I learned this week that no matter what the trouble seems to be and the lengths we go to escape it, love seems to never quit following us. Ok, I'm done!
